How to write guest names on wedding invitations (with examples)
Updated October 6, 2026 · 2 min read
Writing names is where invitations quietly go wrong: a missing plus-one, a misspelled surname, or kids who weren't meant to be invited. The good news is that the rules are simple once you see them written out. Use the examples below exactly as written. They work for printed invitations and for personal digital invitations.
The golden rule: write who is invited
The names on the invitation tell guests exactly who is invited. If a name isn't there, that person isn't invited. That's why clear names matter more than fancy wording.
Single guests
Use the full name. Titles are optional and more formal.
- Emily Carter
- Ms. Emily Carter (formal)
Married couples
- Sarah and James Smith
- Mr. and Mrs. James Smith (traditional)
- The Smiths (casual)
If the couple has different last names, list both full names: Sarah Lee and James Smith.
Unmarried couples living together
List both full names on one line: Anna Brown and David Lee. If they live apart, send each their own invitation.
Plus-ones
If you know the partner's name, use it. Otherwise:
- John O'Neil and Guest
In InviteBatch you can simply type "John O'Neil +1". We turn it into "John O'Neil & Guest" and allow two people to RSVP on that invitation.
Families with children
- The Johnson Family: everyone in the household is invited, kids included.
- Mr. and Mrs. Johnson: only the adults are invited.
- Children over 18 who live at home should get their own invitation.
Doctors, military and other titles
- Dr. Mark McDonald
- Dr. and Mr. Rivera (when one partner is a doctor, the doctor's title goes first)
- Captain Jane Lee and Mr. Tom Lee
Names with accents and particles
Always use the spelling the guest uses: José and Zoë, Siobhán, Renée, de la Cruz, van der Berg. Accents print correctly in every InviteBatch design.
Classic Gold Frame
Wedding
Write names once, use them everywhere
If you're putting names on every invitation, paste your guest list into InviteBatch once. Every guest gets a printed invitation and a personal digital link with their name, and the same list powers your RSVP dashboard.
